                 R- and S- nomenclature of chirality centers

In the simplest and most common case, a chirality center is characterized by an atom that has four different groups bonded to it in such a manner (e.g. tetrahedral) that it has a non-superimposable mirror image.


       Assigning R and S Configurations With the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) Rules

  • Identify each of the chirality centers.
  • Assign the priority (1 to 4) to each group attached to the chirality center




If the two atoms have same atomic number then highest atomic weight atom will be the highest 
priority group or atom.
e.g. (D>H)

About The Author

  I am Kuntal Maity, completed M.Sc. from Vidyasagar University, Midnapore , West Bengal, India.(2013)

and B.Ed (2014). January 2014 I was appointed as a Guest Teacher in organic chemistry at Bajkul Milani Mahavidyalaya till February 2017. After that I had to join Dhawel Jr. Basic School, malda as a Primary Teacher ( WB Gov.) at 14th February 2017 to 25th January 2019 with different experience. In January 28th I join as Asst. Teacher of Chemistry at Mugberia Gangadhar High School(H.S). At present I am working here with great experience as the School is nearly 10 km. from my house.
